Update on Cardiac Arrhythmias

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND INTENDED AUDIENCE:
The intended audience for this 2 ½ day course is health care staff who have completed a prior cardiac arrhythmia course. This course reviews new developments in arrhythmia diagnosis and treatment, current concepts in heart failure management, and care of device patients. Course objectives are to: 1. Provide a thorough overview of cardiac arrhythmias. 2. Acquaint the learner with conditions that are associated with sudden cardiac death. 3. Present differential features for wide and narrow QRS tachycardia. 4. Discuss new technology in the electrophysiology field.
5. Provide an overview of the pathophysiology of heart failure. 6. Discuss current heart failure treatment modalities.
7. Review device interrogation technologies. 8. Review current indicators of pacemaker and ICD implantation.
9. Review pertinent issues in pacemaker and ICD follow up.



COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the program the learner will be able to:
1. Define 2 mechanisms of arrhythmias.
2. State current treatments and new technologies for supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias.
3. Discuss disorders considered high risk for sudden cardiac death.
4. Discuss the etiology and pathophysiology of heart failure.
5. List current medication used for heart failure.
6. State steps in CRT interrogation and analysis of these findings.
7. State at least 2 new indications for pacemaker and ICD implantation.
8. List 3 key points for pacemaker and ICD follow up.

A certificate of attendance will be given upon completion of course requirements, enabling you to register your credit with the appropriate licensing boards or associations. FACULTY
Linda Moulton, RN MS is a cardiovascular researcher and educator, and owner of Critical Care Ed and C.C.E. Consulting, Springfield, IL. Her professional roles have included manager, educator, clinical specialist, consultant and researcher. She has taught across the U.S., for NASPE and for industry. She manages the www.orderanddisorder.com and www.cceconsulting.net web sites. She is currently a doctoral student in education.

Marilyn Prasun, RN Ph.D. CNS is a cardiovascular researcher, educator and clinical specialist with Carle Clinic Association, Urbana, IL. Her areas of expertise are heart failure and cardiac electrophysiology. She is the recent recipient of the American Heart Association’s Martha N. Hill New Investigator of the year Award for her dissertation research in heart failure.
