Event Recorder

This is a device that is quite similar to a Holter monitor but

can run for indefinite periods. Typically, the device is provided

for a 2-4 week period in an attempt to capture the typical

clinical symptoms suggestive of a cardiac arrhythmia. As in

Holter monitoring, the patient activates the device at the time

of a symptom in order to provide precise correlation. Once the

typical symptom takes place, then the event recorder can be

turned in. The patient can have the device for as long a period

as it takes to lead to detection/identification.

A newer form of event recorder technique is now available.

Medtronic, Inc. manufactures the device known as Reveal.

This is an implantable event recorder and is well suited for

patients with fairly infrequent symptoms or in patients who

are unable to properly operate the event recorder device.
