Pacemaker technology has evolved to the extent that there
are now three basic types of generators: the fully automatic
DDD, the single chamber VVI and the dual chamber single lead
VDD device. All have the appropriate rate responsive character-
istics which enable the device to increase rate in accordance
with the metabolic demands of the patient whenever necessary.
Although minor differences in size, weight and shape exists
among manufacturers, the smallest and lightest are readily
available. Due to many simplifications in the implantation process,
the duration of an implant can be as brief as 15-30 minutes.
This has virtually eliminated the intermediate step of placing a
temporary pacemaker.
